burn and rave at close of day

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

2006 was alot of things.
Leaving me with many raw nerved moments and loose ends.
It also solidified bonds and finally brought into focus what it was I was trying to see.

Here are some of the tracks that defined this year for me...

Whirlwind
MakeOutFallOutMakeUp
Anything by this man...
Dilla!
Mr.Spice
Dudley & Koushik
And of course the Godfather

Happy New Year.
Spread love and remember to re-up that positivity for 007

Giving ourselves just enough rope....

At approximately 10pm Eastern Standard Time, December the 29th, Saddam Hussein was hung before the 5th Division intelligence office in Qadhimiya. He was said to have been "strangely submissive" and refused to wear a hood over his face.

On December 24th, the US military death toll officially surpassed that of 9/11, hitting the 3000 mark.

"Saddam Hussein's execution comes at the end of a difficult year for the Iraqi people and for our troops. Bringing [him] to justice will not end the violence in Iraq, but it is an important milestone on Iraq's course to becoming a democracy that can govern, sustain, and defend itself, and be an ally in the war on terror.

"Many difficult choices and further sacrifices lie ahead. Yet the safety and security of the American people require that we not relent in ensuring that Iraq's young democracy continues to progress." -President G.W. Bush

White House deputy press secretary Scott Stanzel said President Bush was asleep when the execution took place and was not awakened. The president had been briefed by national security adviser Stephen Hadley before retiring and was aware the hanging was imminent, Stanzel said.

Personally, Im not entirely sure what or how to feel. I dont have a solid stance on corporeal punishment, believing that the universe tends to its own needs and addresses issues of destruction, spiritual or otherwise. Some would argue an execution is the universes way. Survival of the fittest and the such.

What troubles me most in tonights reports isn't as simple as morality, or the consequences of the physical world and its need for retributions. Its the ethics of the whole thing. When on a mission of vengence, masked in stories of honor and vigilance, is it not to be expected that we look into the eyes of our enemy to acknowledge our victories and our shared humanity? Would the world have thought it something out of the dark ages not befitting the dignity of a hanging? Not quite public, but filmed and aired up til the moment of its actualization, when we are forced against our wills to turn away.

But some of us just choose to sleep through such things.

It is astonishing to me that the need exists to report that Hussein was a "broken man", and am not sure how when walking to the gallows it came as any shock that he appeared submissive. What is left in those last moments but reflection, fantasies of absolution in the eyes of personal deities, and surrender to that which is fate? Martyrdom? Leave this plane while looking into the eyes of the universe. No veils or illusions.

Eid Al-Adha -- a holiday period that means Feast of the Sacrifice, celebrated by Muslims around the world at the climax of the hajj pilgrimage to Mecca. The law does not permit executions to be carried out during religious holidays.

Eid began Saturday for Sunnis and begins Sunday for Shiites. It lasts for four days.

I wonder if the violence in Iraq will slow down during these days.

"I'm going away tonight."

Early this morning legend, icon, and Godfather of Soul, Mr. James Brown, left us at the age of 73.

Take a moment and give thanks to all the music, the breaks, and the dance moves that this man has graced us with. And contemplate what Christmas in Heaven must be like....

Thank you for sparking a movement......

For Goodness Sake

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Although the holidays are stressful and leave an already skint pocket threadbare, Ive gotta admit there may be a glimmer of joy that enters this young jewess heart at the thought of Christmas and all its regalia. Being a sucker for all things themed and being given liberty and licence to act a festive fool is an annual right this cynic is not likely to thumb her nose at.

Yes, the toy stores are mob scenes, the airports are thinly veiled prisons, and office holiday parties are open invitations to test the limits of the socially awkward. Then why the twinkle in my eye? All these factors open up the playing field for joyful and ingenious dissidence from the Christmas canon. This week alone a handful of these sparkling opportunities have come to my attention. First, on Saturday, December 16 at 7:00 pm, starting at the arch in Washington Square Park, composer Phil Kline will lead a massive chorus of boomboxes through the streets of Greenwich Village in the 15th annual holiday presentation of Unsilent Night. Seperate pieces of his composition distributed throughout the crowd on tape (yes they still exist), and signaled to press play simutaneously creating a highly crafted symphony that snakes its way to Thompkins Square Park. Not in NYC? Dont fret, its going on in fifteen different cities on various nights til New Years. Check the site.

But why am I really excited? SANTA! NYC streets filled in the late night hours with trampy elves and thick-belted santa themed outfits. And SantaCon, a celebration of Nick and his seedy underbelly of jolly debauchery and unblinking generosity. Join the Santa Mob, get dressed up, bring some trinkets for the kids, maybe even let a cute stranger sit on your lap and whisper you a wish. Be mindful of that looming list though, or you'll just have to add to the times of role-playing ruining Christmas....

And Down Came the Hammer

Walking into the deli to buy my daily ration of Manhattan Special I glanced over the cover of the Bay News. The local paper that I rarely read past the front page and almost never buy, and there it was: Astroland was sold on Wednesday to Thor Equities. The Cyclone will continue to stand, being property of the Parks Department and a historical landmark (set to turn 80 this summer) but not much else will survive.

Im not sure what the fate of the Wonder Wheel is. I can only hope that after this summer season when the rest of Astroland will be torn away bit by bit that it will continue to stand, but there has been no mention. Whats for sure is that the pirate ship, the haunted house, the "Break-Dance" and the massive Astrotower are all coming down. There has been some talk of relocation but not for the tower. Too big, too old, too late for salvation.

So whats to come of Coney? A massive overhaul. Indoor amusements to run year-round. Luxury beach front property ( I hope a selling point is all the Coney Island Whitefish....) and even a legitimate, non-hourly, hotel. This is currently the plan but many don't buy it seeing that developer Joseph Sitt has already talked big about projects only to later flip land for millions more than what he initially paid, leaving property undeveloped and abandoned. Look into his purchase of former Washington Bathhouse House building at 2015 Boardwalk West in 2005 and sold a little over a year later for a hefty $77 million profit. Its all a bit suspect.

All I know is this, Coney Island has always held a bit of majesty, even in its grey stained off-season. There will always be a fear and a fascination involved with it. At least in my memories and those of my fellow Brooklyn babies who were raised on that bumblebee ride and had nightmares, and later fantasies, about the Cyclone and the Wonderwheel.

I intend on spending many a free afternoon documenting the last bits of this dusty gem. Call if you feel like getting lost in a cotton-candy fantasy......enjoy
